‘It’s everybody’s business’ says new campaign to protect children
Milton Keynes Safeguarding Children Board launched a new campaign on Saturday 6 March to highlight the important message that safeguarding children is everybody’s business.
The campaign called ‘Safeguarding: it’s everybody’s business’, which is championed by MK Dons favourite Aaron Wilbraham, was launched at the family fun day at the Stadium:MK. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness among the public as to what to do if they have concerns that a child or young person is suffering harm. This could be from physical, sexual or emotional abuse, or neglect.
MK Dons striker, Aaron Wilbraham, said: “As a father myself this is a subject that’s close to my heart. I think people are sometimes scared to speak out and tell someone if they suspect a child is being mistreated. The fact is it's better to tell someone than do nothing and then have to live with the possible consequences of doing nothing. As a footballer kids look up to you as a role model and someone they can rely on. They view parents and other adults in the same way. It’s all our responsibilities to look out for the welfare of children and protect them, because if we don’t then who will?”
To launch the campaign, 2,500 Clap-banners displaying the campaign message and phone number for reporting concerns, were given out before the match. Postcards have also been produced to advise adults what to do and who to call if they have concerns. These were handed out on the day and then distributed around the city to doctor’s surgeries, libraries and community points.
Elaine Coleridge-Smith, Independent Chair of the Milton Keynes Safeguarding Children Board, said: “The board was set up to ensure that all organisations that work with children work together to kept them safe from harm. By launching this campaign we hope to give people the support and confidence to speak out if they have concerns that a child is being treated badly. I think most people would report concerns around physical or sexual abuse but maybe not realise that physical neglect and emotional abuse can be just as damaging. This campaign will help advise people what signs to look for, and what to do if they have concerns. Safeguarding children really is everybody’s business and is not something the professionals can deal with alone.”
“I would like to thank the MK Dons and Aaron Wilbraham for supporting this important campaign and allowing us to launch it at their family day.”
In addition to the information for adults, a children’s bookmark has been designed to give children and young people some guidance about what to do if they are worried about a friend or are the victim of abuse or neglect themselves. These will be available at libraries across Milton Keynes.
The final part to the campaign is a pocket sized mini guide for professionals who work with children and young people in Milton Keynes. These will be sent out to numerous organisations including Milton Keynes Council, Thames Valley Police and the Primary Care Trust. This is designed to be a quick reference guide with relevant phone numbers which people can carry with them and access easily.
